Chapter Six

Music echoed throughout the apartment. Head nodding to the beat of the song Patrick played on the acoustic guitar, Craig set a stack of T-shirts into one of the partially filled suitcases on the bed. Packing for the mini-tour with The Fury had kept him busy for the past hour, and he appreciated having company during the tedious task.

Five days had passed since Luke’s phone call asking Craig to fill in for their still-healing guitarist. He’d said yes immediately and Ty had been the first person he’d told. In the two weeks since the whirlwind weekend they’d shared, they’d been texting every day, started off by Craig’s question of how Ty’s flight home had been, sent mere hours after he’d watched Ty drive away from the hotel.

Ty was on his mind first thing in the morning, multiple times during the day, and last thing at night. He had it bad...

Sprawled over the chair by the window, Patrick switched songs, smoothly moving into the opening chords of a song they’d played together often when they got together to jam. Craig gave him a thumbs up and turned back to his suitcase. Running through his mental checklist, he surveyed the contents. Jeans, shirts, socks, boxers, clothes for working out, boots, sneakers, and toiletries. And his guitar case sat waiting by the front door, ready for the trip.

The strumming stopped mid-way through the song. Patrick glanced up from the guitar. "What time are you leaving tomorrow?"

"Luke said he’d pick me up at ten-thirty." He tossed in the new notebook he’d purchased, in case song lyrics struck, then zippered the black canvas bag closed.

"And you’ll be gone how long?"

"Three weeks." He added spare chargers for his phone and tablet to the case holding his shoes, then closed it. If he forgot anything, one of the guys could probably hook him up, or with the major and mid-sized cities on the tour itinerary, buying whatever he needed on the road would be easy.

He lifted the suitcases. The corner of one case snagged the blanket draped across the foot of the bed and tugged it halfway onto the floor. Muttering a curse, Craig set the cases aside and carefully folded the soft knit. Ty had used that blanket to keep warm during their night together. Every time he looked at the blanket and the bed, memories bombarded him of the time he’d spent there with Ty. The same held true for his kitchen, the living room, and even the foundation’s headquarters and the hospital.

Two weeks had passed, and yet, Ty’s presence lingered.

Turning away from the bed, he picked up the cases once again and looked at Patrick. "Want a beer?"

"Sure." He rose, started playing again, and led the way to the living room. The music continued as he walked, reminding Craig of an old-time minstrel.

The suitcases joined the guitar case by the door. Craig laid his leather jacket on top of the bags. "Okay, I’m all set for tomorrow."

"Cool." Patrick returned the guitar to its stand.
